Can it even be winter without talking about snow? No matter the temperature where you are during winter, this melting snowman cupcakes tutorial is just what you need to complete your Christmas dessert table!
If you are looking for just snowman cupcakes like these or a full dessert table like our Melted Snowman Party Tablescape, it’s a great way to kick off the end of the year.
Melted Snowman Cupcakes, A Kids Table Activity
While you are planning Christmas games and treats for your family to be entertained this year, this tutorial is the perfect addition to your kids table! With just a few ingredients, they can decorate their own for a one of a kind, custom dessert. To minimize mess, you can frost your cupcakes ahead and dip in ‘snow’ before your guests arrive. So they just decorate and eat!
How To Make Melting Snowman Cupcakes
To begin, you’ll only need a few ingredients. You can start with already baked cupcakes to make this go faster during the holidays. We baked ours a few days ahead to save on time.
Gather Your Snowman Cupcakes Ingredients
First you’ll need baked vanilla cupcakes (or your favorite cupcake recipe), white sugar crystals, black midi sugar pearls, black sugar pearls, carrot candy sprinkles, chevron cupcake liners (we used red!), and a little bit of buttercream frosting to begin. All of the sprinkles we named are already in this month’s holiday sprinkle mix kit but you can buy them individually as well depending on how many kids will be at your holiday event!
Frost and Dip in Sprinkle ‘Snow’
Gather your baked cupcakes and scoop buttercream on them using just a butter knife or tablespoon in a pinch. Otherwise you grab your favorite small cookie scoop for the perfect amount of icing each time.
Next, you’ll roll the frosted cupcakes in the white sugar crystals to mimic the look of snow. You can use the pressure of the dip to spread your vanilla frosting around the cupcake or you can spread the white frosting around the sides before dipping.
Either method works perfectly, it just depends on how much color of the cupcake you want to show on the sides. If none, you can frost all the way to the cupcakes liner edge. You can softly smooth any lumps of frosting left with a paper towel or napkin.
At this point, you have a perfectly clean, empty slate to begin your melting snowman cupcakes masterpiece!
Build Your Snowman Face
What’s the first thing that gives this design away? The carrot nose of course! Grab your carrot candy sprinkles and place one in the spot for the nose.
Follow up with regular size black sugar pearls for the eyes and our midi black sugar pearls for the mouth. We even put a snowflake quin on each end of his smile!
Once you get your mouth shaped in the design you want, cut your chosen cupcake liner as shown and tie into a cute scarf, bow tie, or any other shape you want for around the neck.
Look how cute the little melting snowmen are! There is no cuter Christmas cupcake tutorial than these. Except maybe the one we are posting later this week…..

Other Melting Snowman Cupcake Ideas
We chose a more traditional Frosty-esque look for ours, but you change it up for any different look for your Christmas party! Switch up the color of the cupcakes and sugar sprinkles to change the tone of the ‘skin’ and even eyes and mouth colors. Have some fun with themed colors or even make a rainbow unicorn feel cupcake! We love the flexibility of this DIY activity!
If you are in a pinch and don’t have any mouth or eye sprinkles, you can easily sub with regular and mini chocolate chips from your pantry!
